Twita-what?

Twita-what?

Twita-who?

Recently there has been a big focus on all things Twitter. You (or is it just me?) seem to hear about it everywhere. All over the web, major news outlets and office chatter. There has even been a big push to get more people at the office to join in on the fun. And I thought Facebook was a tough sale.

While I believe all the attention is great I am afraid that Twitter will be viewed as a fad that will soon pass. I sure hope I am wrong. Good news though, with Facebook, LinkedIn and MySpace still holding strong and proving their value maybe the public will not be so quick to pass judgment on the little bird.

Twitter, defined. According to the boiler plates, Twitter is “is a social networking and microblogging service that allows you answer the question, “What are you doing?” by sending short text messages 140 characters in length, called “tweets”, to your friends, or “followers.” Um, ok. While that may be the official definition, I lean towards the notion that Twitter is what you make of it.

As for my personal use I am finding that Twitter is quickly becoming a daily, if not hourly, staple in my life. I can now “follow” most of the sites/blogs from my RSS reader with Twitter. So that is one less application I have to have running. I having even noticed that I log into Facebook less. My Twitter posts can automatically change my Facebook status. This integration scores major points as I am still on the quest for a one-stop-shop (aka buzzword: social media aggregator) for all my web profiles. I guess Facebook has lost some of its sheen. Maybe that is why they were turned down by Twitter.

And unlike Facebook, which I feel is a little selfish, Twitter is wide-open to developers who can expand on its features. Applications such as Twhirl, TweetDeck and TwitterFon have given the blue bird a shot in the arm.

Hey, maybe I am high on some tweetdust and you can ignore my rants; but why not give it a try? I think you will be surprised.

Let me know your thoughts on Twitter in the comments.
