I am quick to profess my love obsession with German autos, especially Audi and BMW. Add to that my gravitation to smart marketing/advertising and I just go crazy. So it should come as no shock that I am writing this post after seeing BMW and Audi sparring off with some outdoor advertising.
After a little digging I found the Santa Monica independent ad agency Juggernaut Advertising who is responsible for this moment of genius. I sure hope they do not mind me sharing their Flickr and Vimeo (HD link) postings with my readers. Both auto companies executions are very smart and clean and the play on the black on white / white on black reference to chess is just one of the underlining sparks of genius. Ok I have drooled enough. Enjoy!

UPDATE: Apparently the BMW board is already down. and so is the late night install. Well it was fun while it lasted. I hope Juggernaut decides to repost the install video. Install video is back!
UPDATE 2: “…a few days ago, Audi unveiled a new billboard to replace the one with the A4. It featured an R8 supercar and read: “Time to check your luxury badge. It may have expired.” The ad was interpreted as a response to the replacement of BMW’s “Checkmate” ad by an ad for Barney’s Co-op store.” – NYT
